How we pick the best mattress

We evaluate crib mattresses with hands-on inspections, reviews by our readers and online feedback. We do not accept free samples from manufacturers—if we purchase a mattress to review, we buy it from the same sources we recommend on this site (Amazon, stores, etc).

We also meet manufacturers in person at trade events and evaluate product samples and prototypes.

We have been researching and writing about crib mattresses since 1994. With the advent of new foams and cover materials as well as interest in organic and natural mattresses, the options have greatly expanded for new parents.

Moonlight Slumber, the brand

Moonlight Slumber was started by Terri Paul (she has since moved on to crib mattress maker Sopora) who had the idea to create a “hospital grade” mattress for infants and toddlers. Well, that’s a bit subjective—there is no standard for what “hospital grade” means. Moonlight Slumber points to its welded seams that don’t allow liquids to seep into the filling and “medical grade” fabric covers. The company makes three different crib mattresses with both innerspring and foam options. All mattresses are PVC free.

Why this model

Moonlight Slumber’s Little Dreamer foam crib mattress features welded seams and a PVC-free, “medical-grade” cloth cover which means they are water, stain and odor resistant. Plus the covers are anti-bacterial and dust mite and bed bug resistant. The mattress also has two firmness zones–extra firm for babies, firm for toddlers. Here’s a cutaway that explains the different layers in the mattress:

The mattress comes with square corners for a tight fit, an internal fire barrier (no toxic chemicals) and medical-grade foam partially made form soybeans (making it just 7 to 10 lbs.). The mattress is easy to clean and made in the US. The company also touts its mattresses as hypoallergenic. Price: $185 to $195.

Got an unusual size crib? Moonlight Slumber offers custom sizes of their mattresses (in case you purchased a funky size crib from Europe, for example).

Overall reader reviews of Moonlight Slumber are quite positive. Parents note that the mattress doesn’t sag even after months and years of use.

Flaws but not deal breakers

Moonlight Slumber claims all its mattresses are “medical grade” (or “hospital grade”) and “natural.” However, these are rather fuzzy terms with no specific definition. The foam used in the Little Dreamer has been CertiPUR-US tested and the adhesive is GREENGUARD certified.

The whole mattress, however, has not gone through GREENGUARD’s certification—that’s disappointing, as we view third-party verifications of eco claims as more credible than a company’s pronouncements. That said, reader reviews of this mattress have been quite positive, with no reports of off-gassing or other issues.
